Now, before I delve into the lyrics of this beautiful song too much, I should probably explain things a little! This is a departure from my normal postings of music (yeah, one album constitutes ‘normal postings’). Why is it so different, you ask? I could be simple and stereotypical and say it was for a class, but it’s for more than that! Really! I promise! In this class we have been discussing remediation, remixing, and all forms of legal borrowing from previous artists. Something I have come to realize due to this is that literally everything we say, write, and do is directly inspired by someone else. So! Why not embrace the fact that much of what I write is inspired in the same way? HOWEVER. It must be noted that this is completely different than stealing someone’s lyrics or chord progression and becoming famous due to it. This, hopefully you will agree, is taking portions of one product, portions of another, and portions of my own creation and mashing together by my own creation to make something new. The same applies in the way we form sentences, borrowing one word from one source, one phrase from another friend, and eventually forming an intellectual thought.
I must be certain that I pay homage to the artists who I purposely borrowed from, however, so I will list their names and songs again in the track credits. However! Band camp does not allow me to post links to their YouTube music videos and iTunes pages, but you should totally look them up by what I provide.
Now for a little story time! As I was walking one day, I had the brilliant idea of mixing together a couple songs with the same word in their title. I am, due to my girlfriend, a T-Swizzle fanboy, now, so I was, of course, listening to “Shake It Off.” What other songs did I know that had a title similar to that? “Shake Me Down” by Cage the Elephant and “Shake It Out” by Florence + The Machine, that’s what! Each had the word Shake at the start. Each had three words. It was a match made in heaven and perfected through the means of ChristianMingle!
So, please do enjoy this little mash-up I’ve attempted. It’s completely free, because I do not wish to detract from the original authors that inadvertently borrowed their words and chords from their parents and countless authors before them, but please do check out their works if you haven’t heard of them, yet!
